CCI  Press Release

 Pray for the summer – 12th & 13th June 2010

The weekend of 12th and 13th June sees the annual prayer focus for summer camps, holidays and festivals throughout the UK. In excess of 50,000 young people will attend a residential holiday over the summer months with many more than this figure attending one of 30 Christian Festivals to be held in either July or August.

With football fever hitting England the sports camps are looking at receiving record numbers of applicants. But the range of activities available to children has never been wider. With outdoor activities such as canoeing and climbing on offer as well as art, drama and community service camps being popular.

Lorimer Gray, Chairman of CCI, says; “As we enter the main summer months it is so exciting to be able to pray for the thousands of young lives being impacted for the Gospel. This annual initiative will help the church in the UK to focus in on their young people and their friends who will be attending holidays and festivals. I hope you will feel able to join with us to pray for a special harvest this year. “

Materials are available on the website to download and use in church services at:  www.prayforthesummer.co.uk .

CCI  Press Release

Nothing ventured…by Tim Gill

A new publication is now available from the English Outdoor Council website which aims to do some myth busting! 6 myths relating to outdoor education provision in the UK are tackled head on and draw from a range of supporting studies. The author Tim Gill writes convincingly about why activities are safe, the importance of training young people in risk awareness not risk aversion and introduces the concept of risk benefit analysis. The publication is endorsed by the Chair of the HSE and the CE of ROSPA. You would think these were two unlikely supporters but they agree that risk when controlled sensibly is of great benefit.

Use this document to combat those that think outdoor activities are dangerous and don’t achieve much. Each CCI member that is involved in this area of interest will be sent a free copy with their June issue of Getaway. In the meantime it is available as a free download at: http://www.englishoutdoorcouncil.org/wp-content/uploads/Nothing-Ventured.pdf

Pray for the Summer 2010

The summer of 2010 is going to be exciting:  A general election, a world cup and more importantly 50,000 young people around the UK going on a Christian camp or residential.

CCI, the national association of Christian organisations and individuals involved in residential holidays, camps, conference and outdoor centre ministries believe this is so important that they are encouraging everyone to Pray for the Summer on the weekend of 12-13th June.

It’s simple really; everyone prays for the events happening across the country and ask God to continue to use them to change young peoples’ lives. Specifically, CCI hope that the Pray for the Summer campaign will:

• encourage individuals and groups to pray for the work going on this summer. There are loads of great stories out there, like the young lad who committed his life to Christ whilst hiding from bullies under his bed.
• inform Christians about the scope and scale of residential youth work so that they can become active partners in the ministry through: prayer, giving or joining a team.
CCI believe that it is important that those ministries serving young people are supported and that the nations unites to pray for safety, a great time, deep lasting spiritual growth at the different events taking place, and for all the leaders involved, many of whom will be volunteers. If you think you can help by giving your time to a ministry this summer, go to www.cci.org.uk and see where you could help.

Guidance

If you would like to get involved with Pray for the Summer, please go to www.prayforthesummer.co.uk and download the prayer pack. In it you will find more information on Pray for the Summer and CCI as well as tips on how to run a prayer session in different ways.

The prayer pack also contains a news item to put on your church’s bulletin board, and we’d encourage you to do this and spread the word! If you’d like to buy promotional posters or coasters, they are available online at www.cci.org.uk/shop.

If you think you church would be interested in joining Pray for the Summer as a congregation, you can download the PowerPoint presentation on the pray for the summer website. This has in depth prayer points for a range of subjects that could be used for corporate prayer in a service on Sunday 13th June or could be split and handed to home groups to pray through a specific issue.

Australian Bushfire Tragedy.

On Saturday 7th February 2009 a number of bushfires ravaged populated bushland areas of Victoria, Australia mainly to Melbourne’s North West.  These continued to burn with varying levels of intensity until the last was brought under control on March 14th. 35 horrendous days in which:
• over 400,000 hectares (988,000 acres) was burnt across the state
• 210 lives lost (Final toll may not be released until the end of March)
• 2,029 properties destroyed
• 61 businesses lost
o 15 Camps and Conference Centres were substantially destroyed (4 members of Christian Venues Association)
• 5 schools and kindergartens destroyed
• 3 sporting clubs lost
• 5 churches burnt down
• 78 townships affected
• 10,000 people displaced
• 1200 kilometres of containment lines were built to surround the fires
Huge emergency responses were mounted, and the relief and rebuild effort has commenced.  The National Red Cross appeal has so far raised over $245 Million and an announcement was made this week that all affected households would receive $15,000 towards contents and $35,000 towards homes they owned from this fund.

The Christian Venues Association’s (CCI in Australia) Chaplains Laurie and Rohna Venables were in Victoria and visiting members as soon as access was possible.  They spent ten days in the devastated region and provided immediate comfort and assistance where it was required. Christian Venues also commenced collecting funds for affected members, staff and families.  Donations may still be made  by visiting http://christianvenues.org.au/index.php?page=Bushfire-Appeal .  These funds have been used, and will continue to be used to assist those within Christian Camping who have been affected by the fires.  The Association is excited to note that all of the centres affected by fire are keen to re-build.  It is recognised by all that this may take a long time, but they are keen to be involved in their communities recovery and to continue the ministry of Christian Camping that has been so thoroughly established throughout the area.

Christian Venues has been active in meetings with various other associations and government departments as the recovery process gets underway.  There has been a significant effect on the outdoor education and recreation industries throughout Victoria as the emergency progressed for such a long period and groups were unsure if their intended destinations would be accessible or available. The busiest week of the school year for excursions saw the Victorian Education Department close many schools and cancel all out of school events due to concerns for predicted severe weather conditions.  These cancellations, when combined with the cancellations that occurred near fires and further afield as parents and teachers expressed their alarm, have been detrimental to the whole outdoor industry and members would value prayer for quick solutions to immediate cash flow issues.

A number of Centres (including Lyrebird Park, The Summit (Delhuntie Park), Mill Valley Ranch and Forest Edge) have been used by Fire Fighting agencies to house strike teams and command centres.  See http://making-a-start.blogspot.com/2009/03/just-few-pics-over-last-couple-of-weeks.html

A special day for Thanksgiving and Sharing will be led by the  Christian Venues Association Chaplains on March 31st.

Silver to Gold Celebrations get hundreds on bikes

2009 sees the 25th anniversary of CCI the umbrella association of Christian camps, holidays, festivals and centres. The year is being celebrated with a giant bike ride linking up many of the 260 members across the UK. The new CCI website carries a google map showing where the routes of the bike rides are taking place as they are announced.

Some riders will be cycling across the Solent (with the aid of CCI member Morning Star who own a tall ship!), in order to link up with members on the Isle of Wight. Some will be doing it on tandems. A whole range of whacky ideas have been developed to catch the spirit of 25 years of adventure activities and residential experiences.

Jim Hammett, Chief Executive of CCI, says, “This is a great way of many of our members finding some additional sponsorship for their ministries as well as linking up all those in the CCI family. It speaks about the unity there is among so many members serving the same Lord across the nation.”

The association will also be producing a special silver to gold anniversary magazine in June telling some of the many stories of people who have given their lives to Jesus through holidays and retreats. Sunday June 7th represents the exact anniversary date and will be marked with services linked to praying for tens of thousands of young people attending Christian residentials in the summer. Downloads for church services are available on the CCI website.
